In a pivotal Summit League clash, the University of South Dakota (USD) Coyotes broke their seven-game losing streak against the South Dakota State (SDSU) Jackrabbits, securing a commanding 73-54 victory on Saturday. This marked the Coyotes” first win against their rivals since January 8, 2022, reigniting the competitive spirit of this storied rivalry.
The game took place in front of 3,060 enthusiastic fans at the Sanford Coyote Sports Center, who were eager to see their team emerge victorious. The Coyotes, now boasting a record of 17-6 and 7-2 in the Summit League, demonstrated their growth and determination throughout the match.
Head coach Carrie Eighmey, in her second year, highlighted the significance of this win, especially for the senior transfers who had come from other programs and were eager to experience the rivalry”s intensity. Angelina Robles, a standout transfer from the University of Denver, led the way with an impressive performance, hitting 6-of-7 from beyond the arc and finishing with a game-high 25 points.
“It felt awesome,” Robles remarked, emphasizing the importance of preparation and the thrill of playing against a historically dominant SDSU team. The Coyotes entered the game with newfound confidence after a solid first half of the season, including a notable win against Kansas State.
In contrast, the Jackrabbits, who recently experienced a loss to North Dakota State that ended their 67-game Summit League winning streak, struggled to find their rhythm. Despite Brooklyn Meyer“s stellar performance, scoring 27 points, the team lacked support, with the rest of the squad contributing only 17 points collectively.
Coach Aaron Johnston expressed disappointment in his team”s lack of energy and competitiveness during the game, noting that adjustments would be necessary as they navigate the final month of the season. The Jackrabbits are now facing increased pressure to perform, especially with the standings tightening in the Summit League.
The Coyotes” strategy of focusing on limiting contributions from SDSU”s supporting players proved effective, as the Jackrabbits struggled with shooting efficiency, making only 4-of-23 attempts from three-point range.
As the season progresses, both teams must address their respective challenges. USD has sent a clear message with this victory, showing they are formidable contenders in the Summit League. Meanwhile, SDSU, traditionally a powerhouse, must regroup and find ways to adapt if they hope to remain competitive in the upcoming matches.
