In a surprising turn of events, the University of San Diego (USD) basketball program has lost its leading scorer, Ty-Laur Johnson. Coach Steve Lavin confirmed in a postgame interview that the junior guard is no longer with the team. Johnson”s absence was noted during USD”s recent 71-58 victory over Portland.
Coach Lavin stated, “I met with Ty-Laur Johnson earlier this week. We had a productive conversation, an extensive meeting related to his future at USD. And we”ve come to an understanding that it”s best for Ty, at this juncture, to focus on his health and academics.” This decision marks a significant shift for both Johnson and the team as they navigate the remainder of the season.
Johnson, who averaged 14.6 points, 4.3 assists, and 2.3 steals per game, had been a crucial player for the Toreros. Notably, he had recorded 11 games with 18 or more points, including a standout performance of 28 points against Washington State. However, his final game saw him play only five minutes without scoring in an 83-63 defeat to Loyola Marymount.
In Johnson”s absence, Argentine guard Juanse Gorosito stepped up, scoring 19 points and contributing significantly to the team”s efforts. Coach Lavin acknowledged the emotional impact of Johnson”s departure, noting the challenges faced by the players and coaching staff as they adjust to this change.
While the specific reasons behind Johnson”s departure remain unclear, sources indicate a history of disciplinary issues, particularly given his status as a two-time transfer, first from Louisville and then from Wake Forest. Lavin mentioned that he anticipates Johnson will enter the transfer portal to seek opportunities for his final year of eligibility.
As it stands, USD currently holds a tie for eighth place in the West Coast Conference (WCC) with a record of 5-9, with four games left in the season. The WCC tournament is set to commence on March 5 in Las Vegas, and the team must regroup quickly to make a strong push as the season winds down.
