A shocking incident unfolded in France where a couple was victimized by criminals impersonating police officers, resulting in the theft of approximately $1 million in Bitcoin (BTC). This incident occurred in Le Chesnay-Rocquencourt, a suburb located west of Paris, highlighting the growing trend of violent attacks targeting cryptocurrency holders in the region.
According to reports from local media outlets TF1 Info and Agence France-Presse (AFP), the couple, both in their late 50s, was confronted by three men posing as law enforcement officers early Monday morning. The assailants forcibly entered their residence and threatened them with a knife, demanding that the husband transfer their Bitcoin holdings.
The criminals coerced the husband into transferring over 900,000 euros, equivalent to about $1 million, in Bitcoin. In a brutal display of violence, the assailants tied up the man and harmed both him and his partner before fleeing the scene in a white van.
It was reported that the woman managed to free her husband after the attackers left and subsequently alerted their neighbors around 9:00 am local time. The incident has prompted an investigation by the Versailles prosecutor”s office, which is looking into serious charges including armed robbery, sequestration, and criminal conspiracy. As of Tuesday, no arrests had been made in connection with the case.
This incident underscores the increasing prevalence of targeted attacks against individuals involved in the cryptocurrency space. As the value of digital assets continues to rise, so does the risk of criminal activity aimed at holders of such assets. Authorities are urging cryptocurrency holders to remain vigilant and take precautions to protect themselves from potential threats.
The rise in crime relating to cryptocurrencies, such as Bitcoin, is a growing concern not only in France but globally. As regulatory frameworks evolve and the cryptocurrency market expands, the need for robust security measures and public awareness becomes paramount in safeguarding against such criminal activities.
