Murrumbidgee Police Issue Warning on Rising Cryptocurrency Fraud Attempts

Authorities alert the public after a near $20,000 loss from a WhatsApp scam involving cryptocurrency.

Murrumbidgee police have issued a serious warning regarding the increasing prevalence of online fraud, particularly in the realm of cryptocurrency. This alert follows an incident where an individual narrowly avoided losing $20,000 from their bank account due to a fraudulent scheme.

Inspector Glenn Smith reported that the event transpired on Wednesday, January 28. The victim received a message from an unidentified individual on the messaging platform WhatsApp, who claimed the individual was entitled to receive cryptocurrency. The scammer requested sensitive information, including bank account details and a copy of the victim”s driver”s license.

Fortunately, the victim later received a notification from their bank about an unauthorized attempt to execute a $20,000 transaction. Recognizing the fraudulent nature of the request, the victim immediately reported the incident, preventing any funds from being withdrawn.

Inspector Smith cautioned, “If you are approached by someone asking for your banking details or personal identification in exchange for money or cryptocurrency, it is highly likely to be a scam.” This incident underscores the critical need for vigilance when dealing with unknown contacts regarding financial matters.

To assist individuals who may fall victim to such scams, Crimes Stoppers provides a platform for anonymous reporting of fraud and other criminal activities. Individuals can reach out by calling 1800 333 000 or sending messages online.

Authorities recommend the following steps for anyone who believes they have been a victim of fraud:

  • Immediately alert your financial institution and close any unauthorized accounts.
  • Inform family and friends about the fraud to help raise awareness.
  • Update your online passwords and close any compromised accounts.
  • Report the theft of identity-related documents to relevant organizations, such as Service NSW and Services Australia.

As cryptocurrency continues to gain traction, the potential for fraud increases. Staying informed and alert is vital for safeguarding personal finances in an ever-evolving digital landscape.
