Coinbase Launches Regulated Crypto Futures Trading Across 26 European Markets

Coinbase unveils regulated crypto futures trading in Europe, allowing 10x leverage on select contracts.

Coinbase has officially rolled out regulated futures trading for its advanced platform users across 26 countries in Europe. This strategic move enables traders to engage with crypto futures and equity index contracts, including derivatives linked to prominent assets like Bitcoin and Solana. Notably, traders can utilize a leverage of up to 10x on select contracts, enhancing their trading potential.

As part of this initiative, fees for trading these futures contracts are competitively set at a minimum of 0.02%. This launch marks a significant expansion of Coinbase”s derivatives trading capabilities in Europe, reflecting a commitment to providing a compliant and regulated trading environment. Previously, many European traders relied on offshore platforms that offered crypto derivatives with minimal oversight. Coinbase”s entry into this space introduces a regulated alternative from a major global exchange.

The new futures contracts will be available through Coinbase Advanced, the exchange”s professional trading platform. The futures products are being issued under the MiFID framework, which governs financial markets in Europe, ensuring that these derivatives comply with established legal regulations.

In its offerings, Coinbase has included futures linked not only to cryptocurrencies like Bitcoin and Solana but also to equity-related derivatives such as the Mag7 + Crypto Equity Index Futures. This comprehensive approach allows traders to access both crypto-linked and index-linked derivatives within a regulated structure.

Types of Futures Contracts Offered

Coinbase has developed two primary types of futures contracts. The first is a perpetual-style contract, which resembles traditional perpetual contracts but features a five-year expiration period. These contracts incorporate an hourly funding mechanism to align their prices with the underlying market, allowing for daily settlements.

The second type is the dated futures contract, which follows a more conventional model with predetermined expiration dates, typically occurring monthly or quarterly. These contracts are priced daily based on official settlement prices.

Trading Features and Requirements

These futures products come with leveraged trading options designed for active traders. However, it is essential to note that trading in derivatives can significantly amplify both potential profits and losses, making these products unsuitable for all retail investors. Prior to accessing the derivatives section, users must complete eligibility checks, including assessments of trading experience and identity verification.

Coinbase”s launch of regulated futures trading in Europe signifies a pivotal shift in the landscape of cryptocurrency trading, opening up new avenues for traders while adhering to regulatory standards.
