Tether Discontinues CNH₮ Stablecoin Due to Low Demand

Tether will cease CNH₮ issuance and end redemptions after one year, citing limited demand.

Tether has announced the immediate cessation of its CNH₮ stablecoin issuance, attributing the decision to insufficient demand. The company will also terminate redemption services within one year, following a structured process designed to inform users well in advance.

The move represents a strategic shift for Tether, as it reallocates resources to focus on stablecoins that demonstrate stronger adoption and liquidity. In a statement, Tether highlighted that the CNH₮ no longer met their criteria for demand and sustainability, which were crucial for ongoing operational and compliance support.

With this decision, Tether will not mint any additional CNH₮ tokens, effectively locking the circulating supply and halting any market expansion. Current holders of the stablecoin will be able to redeem their tokens under existing terms for the next year before the final deadline is enacted.

The announcement was shared via Wu Blockchain, which underscored that market conditions and lack of community interest were the driving factors behind Tether”s decision. This strategic exit follows a pattern established by Tether for prior discontinued products, emphasizing structured exits complete with advance notice and a fixed redemption window.

In light of this development, Tether aims to enhance its focus on high-usage assets, emphasizing security, liquidity, and long-term relevance across its portfolio of stablecoins. The company”s decision reflects a broader industry trend where stablecoin issuers prioritize products with consistent demand and scalability over experimental currency pegs.

For users involved with the CNH₮, it is advisable to act promptly regarding redemptions, as waiting until the final cutoff could lead to complications. This move also narrows the options for those seeking offshore yuan exposure within the cryptocurrency market, highlighting the evolving dynamics of the stablecoin landscape.
