Opera has launched a significant update to its MiniPay wallet, enabling users to utilize the stablecoin USDT for payments within Argentina and Brazil. This new feature, branded as “Pay like a local,” seamlessly connects MiniPay balances to popular payment platforms, including Mercado Pago in Argentina and PIX in Brazil.
By leveraging this integration, users can make real-time transactions at local retailers without the need for currency conversion or incurring hidden fees. The system automatically converts stablecoins into local currencies, such as the Argentine Peso and Brazilian Real, simplifying the purchasing process for both travelers and locals.
Murray Spark, Head of Commerce at MiniPay, emphasized the advantages of this integration, stating that it empowers stablecoin holders to transact like local consumers. “This bridge helps crypto users avoid card rejections, hidden fees, and poor exchange rates,” Spark noted, highlighting the potential of this feature to enhance the payment experience in Latin America, where traditional financial systems may sometimes be unreliable.
To further bolster its offerings, MiniPay has partnered with El Dorado and Alfred. El Dorado provides a peer-to-peer on- and off-ramp service that facilitates the swift conversion of local fiat into USDT. It also supports instant money transfers and maintains transparent pricing across six Latin American countries. Meanwhile, Alfred enhances the network by offering compliant liquidity and cash-in/cash-out solutions throughout the region.
This multi-ramp approach allows MiniPay users to transition easily between local currencies and stablecoins, thereby enhancing accessibility and convenience. Additionally, Opera has announced that Paytrie, a Canadian money services business, will also join the network. This collaboration aims to facilitate low-cost, cross-border transfers between Canada, the U.S., and Latin America.
Opera”s MiniPay is on a path of continuous innovation, with plans to introduce even more user-friendly features. One upcoming enhancement includes supporting PIX payments through QR codes, allowing users to scan and pay directly from their MiniPay wallets. Julia Syzndzielorz, Opera”s Director of Global Communications, confirmed that this feature is expected to launch soon, further positioning MiniPay as a reliable tool for everyday spending and enhancing the usability of stablecoins in the region.
