NVIDIA Invests $4 Billion in Optical Tech for AI Data Centers

NVIDIA”s $4 billion investment in optics firms aims to enhance AI data center capabilities.

NVIDIA has made a significant commitment of $4 billion towards advancing optical technology, a move aimed at enhancing its AI data center capabilities. The investment, announced on March 2, 2026, is evenly split between Lumentum Holdings (NASDAQ: LITE) and Coherent Corp. (NYSE: COHR), establishing multibillion-dollar purchase agreements for advanced laser components.

This strategic financial infusion is set to bolster U.S.-based manufacturing and facilitate deeper research and development collaborations focused on silicon photonics. NVIDIA views this technology as crucial for constructing what it terms “gigawatt-scale AI factories,” essential for managing the enormous data processing demands of AI applications.

As AI models continue to grow, the challenge of moving data between chips has emerged as a significant bottleneck. Optical interconnects, which utilize light instead of electrical signals, promise enhanced bandwidth and energy efficiency. This is particularly vital for cooling data centers that operate with a power consumption comparable to that of a small city.

NVIDIA”s relationship with Lumentum is not new; the company was named an NVIDIA Silicon Photonics Ecosystem Partner in March 2025. Lumentum”s high-power lasers are already integrated into NVIDIA”s Spectrum-X Photonics and Quantum-X Photonics networking switches, showcasing an ongoing collaboration.

The market has reacted positively to the announcement, with LITE shares rising approximately 11.77%. Over the past year, Lumentum”s stock has surged nearly 900%, driven by increased demand for AI infrastructure. The company recently reported record revenue for Q2 fiscal 2026, reaching $665.5 million, which marks a 65.5% increase year-over-year.

This substantial investment will fund a new fabrication facility, which both NVIDIA and Lumentum anticipate will be necessary to meet the sustained demand for AI data center development.

NVIDIA”s dual investments highlight a critical shift in the perception of optical interconnect technology, from a supplemental option to an essential component of AI infrastructure. By supporting two suppliers, NVIDIA mitigates supply chain risks while fostering competitive innovation. For traders tracking developments within the AI infrastructure sector, the photonics supply chain has just become significantly more relevant. The upcoming earnings call for Lumentum will be crucial in determining whether the $2 billion commitment translates into tangible capacity expansion timelines.
