In a significant advancement for the intersection of traditional finance and blockchain technology, Coinbase has unveiled its new tokenized stock trading feature. This announcement was made during the company”s recent Product Showcase event, where it was revealed that investors can now buy and sell blockchain-based versions of well-known equities such as Tesla, NVIDIA, and Meta directly on the platform.
As the largest cryptocurrency exchange in the United States and the second-largest globally by trading volume, Coinbase aims to attract a mainstream audience to this innovative market. Alongside the tokenized stock trading feature, the exchange is also launching its own prediction market, drawing comparisons to existing platforms like Polymarket and Kalshi.
The push for real-world asset tokenization is increasingly viewed as a major milestone in the broader mission to legitimize blockchain technology within conventional financial systems. Although firms like Ondo Finance and Edel Finance have previously explored tokenized stock offerings, Coinbase”s entry is expected to significantly broaden the appeal and accessibility of this market.
“Now you can trade stocks and a huge selection of crypto all in one place,” stated Max Bransburg, head of consumer products at Coinbase. This development comes shortly after the SEC granted permission to the Depository Trust & Clearing Corporation (DTCC) to pilot tokenized securities, which include stocks, bonds, and U.S. Treasuries represented on the blockchain. The DTCC serves as the official settlement backbone for U.S. markets, and its shift towards on-chain solutions suggests a growing trend of tokenization within Wall Street.
In addition to tokenized stocks, Coinbase also announced expanded listings for Solana assets and plans to introduce equity perpetuals and futures trading early next year. With these initiatives, Coinbase is positioning itself as a comprehensive hub for various trading forms, looking to redefine its role beyond merely a cryptocurrency exchange into a multi-asset financial platform.
