Coinbase Identifies Key Trends for 2026: ETFs, Stablecoins, and Tokenization

Coinbase”s 2026 outlook highlights ETFs, stablecoins, and tokenization as major growth drivers.

In its recent outlook for 2026, Coinbase emphasizes four pivotal trends that are expected to significantly enhance global cryptocurrency adoption: crypto ETFs, stablecoins, tokenization, and clearer regulatory frameworks. On December 31, 2025, David Duong, Coinbase”s head of investment research, noted that substantial progress in crypto adoption had been achieved throughout 2025.

Duong stated, “The adoption advanced materially in 2025. Spot ETFs have created durable, regulated access, while digital asset treasuries (DATs) emerged as new corporate balance-sheet vehicles.” He also pointed out that both tokenization and stablecoins have become integral parts of core financial workflows, suggesting a growing integration of digital assets into traditional finance.

According to Coinbase”s analysis, spot crypto ETFs launched in major markets in 2025 represent a structural turning point for the industry. This development provides traditional investors with a familiar and regulated method to invest in assets like Bitcoin and Ethereum. The firm anticipates that the timelines for ETF approvals will accelerate in 2026, further facilitating institutional participation.

Additionally, Coinbase highlights the rise of digital asset treasuries (DATs) as an important trend, where corporations are increasingly choosing to hold crypto exposure through regulated vehicles instead of directly on-chain. This shift is expected to normalize the presence of cryptocurrencies on corporate balance sheets.

While the market cap of stablecoins remains in the hundreds of billions, their role is already significant, moving trillions of dollars annually across exchanges and decentralized finance (DeFi) platforms. Coinbase predicts that as regulatory clarity improves, stablecoins will take on a more prominent role in delivery-versus-payment frameworks, enhancing everyday payment processes and cross-border transactions.

Although the tokenization of real-world assets (RWAs) is still in its infancy, valued in the low single-digit billions, it is witnessing increasing adoption. Financial institutions, including banks and asset managers, are exploring blockchain technology for collateral and settlement purposes.

In summary, Coinbase asserts that 2025 marked a crucial transition toward regulatory clarity in key jurisdictions, setting the stage for greater institutional engagement in the cryptocurrency space in 2026. The company emphasizes that the demand for cryptocurrencies has expanded beyond early adopters, moving beyond simple macro-hedge narratives associated with digital gold.
