Bhutan Transfers 175 BTC in 2026 While Retaining Significant Bitcoin Reserves

Bhutan moved 175 BTC valued at $11.85 million in 2026, yet holds a substantial national reserve of the cryptocurrency.

The government of Bhutan has executed a transfer of 175 BTC in 2026, equating to approximately $11.85 million. This movement highlights the nation”s ongoing strategy to manage its digital assets while retaining a considerable reserve of the cryptocurrency.

Recent blockchain data analyzed by Arkham Intelligence reveals that Bhutan has engaged in several smaller Bitcoin transactions throughout the year. Cumulatively, the government has moved over $42 million in Bitcoin during 2026, including a notable transfer of about $6.8 million in the previous month.

Despite these transactions, Bhutan”s national Bitcoin reserves remain substantial, with estimates suggesting that the country still holds around 5,600 BTC, valued at approximately $381 million. These assets are overseen by Druk Holding & Investments, the sovereign investment entity of Bhutan.

The pattern of these transactions indicates a cautious management approach, focusing on occasional sales in moderate volumes, typically between $5 million and $10 million per operation. This strategy not only mitigates the risks associated with large-scale liquidations but also allows the government to maintain a dominant position in Bitcoin holdings.

One unique aspect of Bhutan”s Bitcoin reserve accumulation is its reliance on large-scale mining operations powered by the country”s extensive hydropower capabilities. The availability of renewable and low-cost energy has enabled Bhutan to generate significant amounts of Bitcoin over the years without the need to purchase directly from exchanges.

In July 2025, Bhutan undertook a much larger Bitcoin transfer, moving over $60 million within just four days. At that time, the government”s official wallets held more than 11,000 BTC, valued at around $1.4 billion, representing a sizeable portion of the nation”s economy. Since then, Bitcoin”s price has fluctuated, dropping from levels near $119,000 to its current trading range around $69,000. Nevertheless, Bhutan continues to rank among the governments with significant Bitcoin reserves.

The ongoing management of these assets reflects Bhutan”s strategic positioning in the cryptocurrency landscape, balancing between utilizing its digital treasury and safeguarding its long-term holdings.
