US Dollar Depreciates Over 10% in 2025 as Precious Metals Surge

The US dollar has lost over 10% of its value in 2025, prompting warnings from economists about market stability.

The US dollar is facing a significant decline, having lost more than 10% of its value in 2025, raising alarms among economists about the stability of the global financial framework. The US Dollar Index (DXY) has dropped by 10.41% since the beginning of the year, indicating a steep depreciation against major currencies such as the euro, yen, and pound.

This depreciation aligns with a remarkable rise in precious metal prices, with gold experiencing a surge of 65.32%, reaching $4,331 per ounce, while silver has skyrocketed by 147.97% to $72 per ounce. These movements in the precious metals market are being interpreted as a “flash warning” for the broader economy, according to economist Tyler Cowen.

In a recent op-ed published in The Free Press, Cowen articulated that the soaring prices of gold and silver signal a new potential crisis ahead. He noted, “The rush for precious metals should worry us all. It reflects a new and possibly disastrous danger on the horizon.” Cowen elaborated on the increasing correlation within the economy, explaining that fewer financial safeguards are available if economic or political conditions deteriorate.

Historically, investors have flocked to the US dollar as a safe haven asset during times of uncertainty. Cowen pointed out that this trend is shifting as perceptions of US policies and leadership become increasingly erratic. “It used to be that if you were worried about the future, you would move into dollars as the safe haven,” he explained. However, with growing unpredictability in US governance and economic conditions, investors are now seeking alternative hedges beyond the dollar.

This shift in investor sentiment is critical, as it indicates a loss of confidence in the dollar”s traditional role as a protective asset in turbulent times. The current market dynamics suggest that the dollar”s status as the world”s reserve currency may be under pressure, compelling a reevaluation of financial strategies among investors.

As the situation evolves, market participants are advised to stay informed and consider the implications of these trends on their investment decisions. The rise in the value of precious metals could represent a significant shift in the landscape of financial security, warranting close observation and analysis.
